KEANSBURG, NJ — Monmouth County is replacing the old wooden bridge that carries the Henry Hudson Trail over Waackaack Creek in Keansburg with a new steel bridge.

The Henry Hudson Trail between Laurel Avenue in Hazlet and Creek Road in Keansburg was closed starting Aug. 18 for the construction project. That section of the trail will be closed for approximately eight weeks so the county can build the new bridge.

For those who use the Henry Hudson Trail, there is a detour posted, along 10th Avenue and 8th Avenue in West Keansburg.

This is the old wooden timber bridge over Waackaack Creek, and it's approximately 100 years old. It is a former train trestle bridge that was converted for pedestrian use when the Henry Hudson Trail was first built.

It needs to be entirely replaced, says Monmouth County.

"The existing bridge has outlived its design life and needs replacement," said Monmouth County in this statement on the project. "Its support piles have deteriorated at the waterline to the point where it will soon be unsafe to cross."

The new bridge will be all steel. Even though it will be built primarily for pedestrian use, the new bridge will be sturdy enough to carry Park System vehicles and emergency vehicles over the creek.

The new bridge will look similar to the one pictured above, which carries the Henry Hudson Trail over Thornes Creek, also in Keansburg.

The contractor is Vulcan Construction.

This was announced in August by the Monmouth County Park System, which also published this information sheet about the project: https://www.co.monmouth.nj.us/...
