Since entering preschool five years ago, (MFS) second grader Lily Buchdahl has chosen to forgo birthday presents and instead select a charitable endeavor. This year’s birthday party attendees were asked to bring book donations for the Bookmates program.
Bookmates, an interfaith literacy program sponsored by the Jewish Community Relations Council and the Catholic-Jewish Commission, provides elementary schools in low-to-moderate income communities throughout South Jersey with books (from kindergarten to second grade). Lily’s generous MFS classmates and friends provided more than two dozen new books and $100 in gift cards for the organization.
In prior years, Lily, 8, has asked her party attendees to provide dinnerware (for a homeless shelter), food pantry donations, and baby products for new mothers needing assistance. Lily looks forward to continuing with her birthday tradition next year.
