Driver Seriously Injured In South Jersey NJ Turnpike Crash: NJSP

The crash took place after a state trooper attempted to make a motor vehicle stop on the shoulder of the turnpike, authorities said.

BORDENTOWN, NJ - A driver from Mount Vernon, New York was seriously injured after fleeing an attempted motor vehicle stop by state police on the New Jersey Turnpike in Bordentown, authorities said.

At around 10:35 a.m. on the outer roadway of the NJ Turnpike northbound near milepost 54.2, a state trooper attempted to check on a stopped Honda Accord on the shoulder of the turnpike, a spokesperson for the New Jersey State Police told Patch.

The driver subsequently sped off northbound on the outer roadway before crossing over onto the northbound inner roadway, striking the passenger side of a Honda Odyssey, the spokesperson said.

The Honda Odyssey then struck the concrete median resulting in minor injuries to all of its five occupants, state police said. The 49-year-old driver of the Honda Accord also suffered “serious injuries” as a result of the crash.

The left lane of the northbound inners was closed for approximately three hours, state police said, resulting in “moderate” traffic congestion.

The crash remains under investigation.
