Moorestown K-9 Saltz Set To Join Force After Graduation

K-9 Saltz and his human companion Ptl. Kevin Sloan have just graduated from the 12-week Scent Detection Dog Course in Atlantic County.

MOORESTOWN, NJ — The Moorestown Police Department’s newest K-9 addition is getting ready to join the force.

K-9 Saltz and his human companion Ptl. Kevin Sloan have just graduated from the 12-week Scent Detection Dog Course at the Atlantic County K-9 Academy, the police department announced this week.

The new K-9 officer will take over for K-9 Chico, who joined the department in 2017 when Moorestown brought back it's K-9 unit.

K-9 Saltz will serve Moorestown and surrounding communities in a wide range of law enforcement activities, police said. This includes tracking for missing/endangered persons, evidence recovery, narcotics detection, community outreach, deterring criminal activity and more.

He comes to the police department via a donation from the Anderson Family to the Hometown Foundation.

The Hometown Foundation has now also set up a website in which members of the community can make donations to the police department. That website can be found here.

The Hometown Foundation, founded in 2002, raises money to support a broad range of programs that meet the community's needs, according to the foundation's website. This includes acquiring K-9 officers for police departments.

David Anderson, a Moorestown native, was at a Hometown Foundation event in Florida when he learned that the foundation was donating a police dog of the donor's choosing. It wasn't long before Moorestown police got the call that they were getting a new K-9.

Moorestown police announced K-9 Saltz was joining the police department in July. Saltz is the first K-9 the foundation donated in New Jersey, the organization said in a social media post.

He is a 14-month-old dog from the Czech Republic, according to Sloan. He will start training in the fall, and join the department when he is fully certified.

At that time, Sloan said he was hoping to expand the K-9 unit, which only has one dog. Read more here: Donated K-9 Set To Join Moorestown Police Force
