Photos: WAMS Brings Students' Summer Reading to Life

For the second year in a row, the middle school participated in the "One Book, One School" program.

(WAMS) students and staff spent Friday reenacting their summer reading as part of the school’s “One Book, One School” program.

The program, which has been employed by schools nationwide, entails every student, every staff member and many parents all reading the same book over the summer and then spending a day during the school year discussing and, in a sense, reliving the world the of the book as a learning exercise.

This summer, WAMS students and staff read Countdown, by Deborah Wiles, a novel about a sixth-grade girl growing up in the 1960s. Principal Carole Butler said the students spent Friday learning dances from the era, creating T-shirts and buttons with images from the '60s, and listening to Wiles give a presentation about her book, among other activities.

“What you’re doing is you’re bringing the book to life, so to speak, in conversation and action,” said Butler. “(The students) participated well for the entire day.”

WAMS staff provided Patch with images from the day.
