2 Morris County Hospitals Among Best Nationwide, Recent Rankings Say

MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — A newly-released ranking of the best hospitals in the country lists two Morris County medical centers among the top 250 for quality care.

Healthgrades evaluated 4,500 U.S. hospitals across more than 30 common procedures and conditions to determine those that received 2024 America’s Best Hospitals Awards.

Morristown Medical Center was in the top 50 for the ninth year in a row, and Chilton Medical Center in Pompton Plains made the top 250 for the second year in a row. Both of these medical centers are part of the Atlantic Health System, as is Overlook Medical Center in Summit — also part of the top 50 list.

Atlantic Health System's executive vice president and chief health system officer, Scott Leighty, said the rankings "further underscore the commitment to high quality care and safety" that the teams at these facilities have made.

“The talented team members, doctors and other clinicians at these medical centers are setting the standard not only for our organization, but also for health care facilities throughout the state and nation," he continued.

In Healthgrades' state rankings, Morristown Medical Center is ranked in the top three in New Jersey for Cardiac Care, Coronary Intervention and Cardiology, and Chilton Medical Center is ranked within the top three for Critical Care.

The online physician and hospital locator said in a news release that it used data-driven, clinically validated methodology that focuses solely on patient outcomes to determine the rankings.

“Hospital quality is a crucial, yet often overlooked, factor to consider when choosing a doctor,” Healthgrades’ chief medical officer and head of data science Dr. Brad Bowman said in the release.

Morristown Medical Center is among the top 1 percent of hospitals nationwide for overall clinical performance, having been on the list for nine consecutive years, the health system added.

Healthgrades listed 10 New Jersey hospitals among that top 250, but Morristown Medical Center and Overlook Medical Center were the only two from the Garden State to be in the top 50.

Healthgrades said a recent survey showed 76 percent of consumers would only choose hospitals with high-quality rankings for their condition or procedure, and nearly two-thirds (63 percent) are more likely to choose a hospital that received a quality award when deciding between two hospitals before scheduling a procedure.
