4 Vehicle Break-Ins, 1 Stolen Vehicle Reported In Morris Plains

Police are reminding residents to lock their vehicles and be cautious when leaving their vehicles parked.

MORRIS PLAINS, NJ — Due to an increase in vehicle thefts and break-ins, the Morris Plains Police Department would like to remind all residents to be cautious when leaving their cars parked.

Over the weekend there were four reported vehicle break-ins and one reported stolen vehicle, according to police. So far, the break-ins have taken place on Hillview Avenue, Hawthorne Avenue, and Maple Avenue.

Around 6:48 a.m. on Friday, July 8, police were called to Watnong Drive/Glenbrook Road for attempted vehicle theft. The suspects tried to steal a vehicle but discovered that both vehicles were locked in the residents' driveway. The suspects fled and returned to the vehicle in which they were driving.

"As a reminder, be sure to do your part and make sure that your vehicle is locked at all times when parked. This is the second time in two days suspects were in our town attempting vehicle thefts, with one vehicle being stolen," police said.

Police officers recommend that all residents who have video surveillance at their homes check for any suspicious activity and register their cameras with the police department.

The Morristown Department of Public Safety offered the following tips earlier this year to avoid becoming the victim of theft:

  • Never leave your car running or the keys in the ignition when you are away from it, even for "just a minute."
  • Keep valuables out of sight or in the trunk. Purses, money, credit cards and cell phones in plain view only help attract thieves.
  • Always close the windows and lock your car, even if it is in your driveway, garage or in front of your home or a business. Never leave key fobs in the vehicle.
  • Always be alert, and report suspicious activity immediately by dialing 911.
  • If your vehicle has an alarm or other anti-theft device, use it.
