Illegal Deer Hunting Investigation Underway In Morris Township

Police say unknown individuals shot multiple deer with a blow-dart gun in the area of Speedwell Avenue and Max Drive.

MORRIS TOWNSHIP, NJ — Morris Township police are searching for individuals responsible for the illegal killing of a deer on township property.

According to police, on Aug. 22, unknown individuals shot multiple deer with a blow-dart gun in the area of Speedwell Avenue and Max Drive, killing at least one deer.

The dead deer was found near razor-sharp metal darts, officials said.

"These metal darts could have easily harmed another person. Our officers have observed additional deer in the area with darts hanging from their bodies," the Morris Township Police Department said.

According to officials, the investigation has led police to believe that the suspects drove a gray or silver sedan, possibly a Subaru Legacy. Police also believe that the suspects took photos with the blow-dart gun prior to poaching the animals.

If anyone has any information that can assist in identifying the suspects, they are asked to contact the Morris Township Detective Bureau at 973-326-7480.

Although the White-tailed Deer herd in New Jersey is an important component of the landscape throughout the state, hunting at an MCPC property is only permitted with an access permit given by the MCPC.

Anyone caught hunting without an access permit in an MCPC facility will be prosecuted to the maximum extent of the law.
