'Micro' Earthquake Startles Morris County Residents

The earthquake occurred south of Randolph, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The U.S. Geological Survey has changed the estimated epicenter of this earthquake from three km west of Morris Plains to three km south-southeast of Randolph.

MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — A 1.6 magnitude earthquake jolted Morris County Monday morning.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake struck at around 5:40 a.m., three kilometers west of Morris Plains.

Residents on social media reported feeling the shaking early this morning.

“Around 5:40 a.m. I felt the house shake,” one resident wrote on Nextdoor. “Followed by another smaller one. Then at 6:20 (a.m.) it happened again. Cats are scared and running around.”

No damage or injuries have been reported at this time.

Earthquakes under 2.0 on the Richter scale are classified as 'micro' earthquakes, and often not felt.
