Morris Plains Author to Hold Autism Chat

Come out and chat with Shelley Tzorfas of Morris Plains and author of "Recovering Autism, ADHD, & Special Needs: A Guide to Help Parents and Those who Work with Children Heal their Children Now"

April is National Autism Awareness Month. Some Morristown residents are showing support by lighting up their neighborhood blue, but for one Morris Plains resident, she's doing it her own way.

Shelley Tzorfas, author of “Recovering Autism, ADHD, & Special Needs: A Guide to Help Parents and Those who Work with Children Heal their Children Now,” is inviting the public to come in and chat about her book on Sunday, April 14 at 11 a.m., at Barnes & Noble, Livingston Mall, 112 Eisenhower Pkwy., Livingston.

Tzorfas has been working with children, teens, and young adults who have learning disabilities, ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, and other special needs. With over two decades of experience, Tzorfas has created ways to help these children succeed in academics and social goals while teaching parents how to navigate the educational system.

"Autism is up to 50 multiple layers of illness that can be stripped away one layer at a time," she said adding that it includes skin issues such as eczema, bowel disorders-constant constipation and intermittent diarrhea, eyes not tracking together, sensory overload, and a plethora of others. "It is a medical condition, not psychiatric or mental. Many kids who are diagnosed  with ADHA-Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder actually have a systemic internal infection ... The symptoms of ADHD are the same as the symptoms of people who have Candida or yeast. They have trouble focusing, mood swings, whiney, they tap a lot , they can't find things, poor memory. Most kids with ADHD have a yeast infection in the gut."

“Recovering Autism, ADHD & Special Needs” is a guide for parents and teachers to learn efficient and effective ways to heal special needs children now. One in six children has a developmental disability and one in five is neurologically impaired, there is no time to wait for so-called experts to eventually figure out what to do.

Tzorfas holds an MFA degree from Rutgers University, has studied education at Hunter College and NYU, and has worked as a child advocate. This particular Barnes & Noble prides itself on hosting community events. A children’s story time will follow the presentation, which will afford parents some extra time to have their questions answered.

This year will also be the second year the local community is participating in "Walk Now for Autism Speaks," which is the nation's largest grassroots autism walk program that takes place in communities across the United States and is also Autism Speaks' signature fundraising and awareness event.

Those looking to support the cause can start creating teams to join and raise money for the local Autism Speaks walk or you can join as an individual. The local walk will take place in Central Park in Morris Plains on Saturday, Oct. 5 and has raised a little over $4,000. Not able to make it but still want to help out? You can donate as well on the website.
