MORRISTOWN, NJ — The next phase of infrastructure improvements at Morristown Airport will be funded with an additional total of $10 million, according to plans.

The Morristown Town Council recently approved two resolutions authorizing up to $10 million in airport upgrades as part of an ongoing program of improvements and maintenance over several years to bring the building up to date.

The first measure, an ordinance, was first presented to the public in January and provides for the relocation of an airport taxiway for $1 million.

The second measure, which is a resolution, authorizes grant funding for a $9 million project at the airport to improve a runway safety area.

According to the Morristown website, the Federal Aviation Administration's Airport Improvement Program will cover 90 percent of the cost, or $9 million, with DM Airports and the New Jersey Department of Transportation each committing the additional costs.

The town is obligated to make no financial contribution to either of the scheduled improvement projects.

The airport, which opened in the 1930s, is located in neighboring Hanover but is owned and operated by Morristown as a municipal utility.

Both measures were approved unanimously by the five council members present at the February meeting, and no public comment or discussion was heard from the council.

The runway work, which was funded last fall, was expected to take place over the next two years, according to officials. The airport website includes a project timeline, which estimates that all work will be completed in the fall of 2028.

According to the airport, the next phase, or Phase IX, of its Runway 5-23 Rehabilitation Project is set to begin on July 10 and is projected to end sometime in the fall.
