State OKs cameras for 176 police departments in New Jersey.

BOONTON TWP., N.J. – Two Morris County police departments will now outfit their officers with body-worn cameras after the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office approved $2.5 million in funding for the equipment statewide.

Boonton Township and Rockaway Borough police departments are among 176 squads statewide awarded grants, Hoffman announced Monday.

Boonton was approved for the 24 cameras it requested, and will receive $12,000 in funding. Rockaway Borough received approval for the 16 cameras it requested, and is being granted $8,000.

“We clearly are leading the nation when it comes to our efforts in New Jersey to deploy body-worn cameras to promote transparency and mutual accountability of police and civilians,” said Acting Attorney General Hoffman. “The overwhelming response we received from law enforcement to our offer of funding demonstrates that police officers are embracing this technology to protect themselves, assist them in their work, and foster stronger police-community relations.”
