MORRISTOWN, NJ — The wait is almost over for Shaka Kitchen, which was founded by a Food Network "Chopped" winner, to make its debut in Morristown.

Kiersten Gormeley, a Wyckoff native, introduced Shaka to the world when she was named "Chopped" champion in 2021. It's named for the shaka sign (aka the "hang loose" hand gesture), which Hawaiians use to convey the "Aloha spirit."

The restaurant will have a soft opening on Saturday, April 13 and Sunday, April 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at their new store, 62 South Street in Morristown.

After spending a year living in Hilo and discovering fresh and affordable foods like poke bowls and acai, Kiersten and her sister Krista were inspired to create easy access to delicious, wholesome food right here in the Garden State.

But another inspiration came from Kiersten's personal journey, which includes a bout with thyroid cancer in 2015.

Kiersten works as the head chef at Hoboken’s two Shaka Kitchen locations, the first of which she opened with Krista and their brother Eric in 2016 (as Shaka Bowl).

Shaka Kitchen will officially be open in Morristown beginning next week from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Tuesday to Saturday, Krista confirmed to Patch.

Shaka's recipes are all homemade, as the sisters told Patch last year. They offer a colorful variety of signature land and sea bowls, earth bowls, smoothies, tacos and signature breakfast items, all with a health-conscious twist.

As part of this philosophy, the restaurants offer foods that fit a range of dietary needs, including vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free and plant-based options. In-house preparation also ensures that there is no added sugar or soy.

They will also serve Lavazza coffee.

The 1400-square-foot space in Morristown has 20 seats and will be accented with wood and artful tiling, and bright imagery from the sisters' Hawaiian travels.
