Running Recap of Saturday's State Wrestling Championships

UPDATED AT 8:55 P.M.–All right, readers, it's that time again. Time for Patch to shut down the live blog. Another great day of wrestling, and another to come Sunday. Come back Sunday for photos and stories from Saturday's long day of action. Watchung Hills' Mike Madalgo's semifinal win led the way for our group of Patch area wrestlers. He will go for the title Sunday. Make sure to come back again Sunday for another live look at action. We're happy to bring it to you. Saturday's attendance was announced at 10,006.

  • UPDATED AT 8:43 P.M.–Montville's Bernstein advances too! He defeats Kevin Stadtmueller of Absegami, 8-4. Sunday, he faces Delbarton's Sullivan. Sullivan defeated Dan Garwood of Clearview in his match. Stadtmueller was the wrestler who defeated Morristown's Darren Dungee in wrestlebacks earlier today.
  • UPDATED AT 8:37 P.M.–Sullivan wins his match, 7-3. Bernstein trying to do the same two mats over.
  • UPDATED AT 8:33 P.M.–Bernstein up 2-1 after one period. Sullivan up 2-1 after the second period in his match.
  • UPDATED AT 8:29 P.M.–Sullivan wrestles to 0-0 tie in first period. If he wins, and Bernstein wins, they face each other in the 215-pound consolation finals.
  • UPDATED AT 8:26 P.M.–Bernstein takes a 2-0 lead. Delbarton's Dean Sullivan now in the consolation semifinals of the same weight class.
  • UPDATED AT 8:23 P.M.–Montville's Taylor Bernstein is now wrestling in his consolation semifinal match.
  • UPDATED AT 8:18 P.M.–Delbarton's Gobbo will be the one making it to the consolation finals in 140. He defeats Hillsborough's Guidice, 10-0. Guidice will now head to the fifth-place match. 
  • UPDATED AT 8:15 P.M.–Gobbo taking control. He is up 8-0 after the second period. One more to go.
  • UPDATED AT 8:12 P.M.–Gobbo carries a 2-0 lead into the second period against Guidice.
  • UPDATED AT 8:08 P.M.–It's on to the third-place match in 135 for Canfora. He wins in a tiebreaker, 2-1. Now we have of Hillsborough's T.J. Guidice and Devon Gobbo of Delbarton facing each other in 140 in the consolation semis.
  • UPDATED AT 8:06 P.M.–Second overtime starting, same score.
  • UPDATED AT 8:04 P.M.–It's overtime for Canfora, who ends the third period in a 1-1 tie with Louis Mascola of Seton Hall Prep.
  • UPDATED AT 8 p.m.–Canfora takes a 1-0 lead in the match after the second period.
  • UPDATED AT 7:55 P.M.–Here comes Delbarton's Jeff Canfora, wrestling in the consolation semifinals.
  • UPDATED AT 7:42 P.M.–Rogers can't come back on Timber Creek's Ricky Carter. He falls, 4-0, and will now wrestle in the fifth-place bout.
  • UPDATED AT 7:40 P.M.–Rogers losing heading into the third period, still down 2-0.
  • UPDATED AT 7:37 P.M.–Rogers falls down 2-0. We are past the midway point of the second period.
  • UPDATED AT 7:32 P.M.–Max Rogers of Delbarton is now wrestling in the 112-pound consolation semifinals. If he wins, he will make it to the third-place match.
  • UPDATED AT 7:29 P.M.–Delbarton's Sullivan falls into the wrestlebacks after losing 11-2 to Bound Brook's Campolatta. Sullivan next wrestles in the consolation semifinals. Campolatta has dominated his way through to the finals this weekend. He won his first match by way of pin, his second with a 15-0 major decision, and now this victory over Sullivan, who himself had been very impressive leading up to this match.
  • UPDATED AT 7:25 P.M.–Sullivan falling further behind. He trails 5-0 heading into the third period.
  • UPDATED AT 7:21 P.M.–Campolatta takes an immediate 2-0 lead in the first period.
  • UPDATED AT 7:19 P.M.–Here we go. Sullivan takes the mat to attempt a trip to the finals!
  • UPDATED AT 7:12 P.M.–Strong finish by Montville's Bernstein! He beats Hull of Phillipsburg, 5-0. He will now compete in the consolation semifinals in 215. In 215, also, Sullivan is on deck for Delbarton in the semifinals.
  • UPDATED AT 7:08 P.M.–Bernstein still holding slight 2-0 lead heading into the third period.
  • UPDATED AT 7:02 P.M.–Montville's Bernstein takes a quick 2-0 lead in the first.
  • UPDATED AT 7:02 P.M.–Here we go. Bernstein takes the mat.
  • UPDATED AT 6:50 P.M.–Montville's Bernstein is on deck to wrestle for his chance at the consolation semifinals. He has already defeated Richie Torres of Bergenfield today, pinning him in 1:25 during wrestlebacks. Before that, he fell in the quarterfinals earlier in the morning, losing to Andrew Compolatta.
  • UPDATED AT 6:31 P.M.–We need to get through a number of weight classes now before Taylor Bernstein of Montville and Dean Sullivan of Delbarton take the mats, both in the 215-pound weight class. Bernstein is facing Brandon Hull of Phillipsburg in wrestlebacks, while Sullivan takes on powerful Andrew Campolatta of Bound Brook in the semifinal round of the class. Come back soon.   • UPDATED AT 6:25 P.M.–Jefferson's Monarque has tough time in the third period after the injury timeout. He falls to Marotti, 6-2. He now has one match left, the 7th place consolation match.
  • UPDATED AT 6:21 P.M.–Long injury stoppage, where trainers looked at Monarque. They let him head back on the mat. Second period finishes with him trailing, 2-1.
  • UPDATED AT 6:18 P.M.–After taking a short-lived lead about midway through the first period, Monarque falls behind West Essex's Frank Marotti, 2-1. Still time left in the second.
  • UPDATED AT 6:17 P.M.–Slow starts the norm tonight at Boardwalk Hall. Jefferson's Monarque tied 0-0 after one period.
  • UPDATED AT 6:15 P.M.–Delbarton's Gobo took a 1-0 lead, but a fast and furious finish by Wagenhoffer gives him the 4-1 victory. Gobo now heads to the consolation semifinals.
  • UPDATED AT 6:13 P.M.–Jefferson's Mike Monarque taking the floor.
  • UPDATED AT 6:11 P.M.–Stalemate so far, with Delbarton's Gobo tied 0-0 with Wagenhoffer after two periods.
  • UPDATED AT 6:09 P.M.–Hillsborough's Guidice has his hand raised! Will head to the consolation semifinals.
  • UPDATED AT 6:08 P.M.–Delbarton's Gobo wrestling in the 140-pound semis, facing Drew Wagenhoffer of High Point.
  • UPDATED AT 6 P.M.–Guidice falls behind quickly in the second, 2-0, but comes back to tie the match before the end of the period.
  • UPDATED AT 5:58 P.M.–Hillsborough's Guidice in a tough battle with Kevin Collins of Randolph for the right to make it to the consolation semifinals. Score 0-0 after on period.
  • UPDATED AT 5:56 P.M.–That's it! It will be Delbarton's Canfora who will move on in wrestlebacks for 135, defeating Boyle of Rutherford 8-4. T.J. Guidice of Hillsborough set to take the same mat for the 140-pound class.
  • UPDATED AT 5:54 P.M.–8-4 lead midway through the third for Canfora. Looking strong.
  • UPDATED AT 5:53 P.M.–Canfora enters the third period with the advantage, leading 6-3 over Boyle.
  • UPDATED AT 5:51 P.M.–Canfora gains a 4-3 lead. We're now midway through the second period.
  • UPDATED AT 5:48 P.M.–Still 3-3 in Canfora's matchup after the first period ends.
  • UPDATED AT 5:47 P.M.–Fast-paced bout! Tied 3-3 and we're only half way through the first period.
  • UPDATED AT 5:46 P.M.–Two early points for Canfora, taking a 2-0 lead.
  • UPDATED AT 5:45 P.M.–Delbarton's Canfora taking the mat. He and Boyle of Rutherford are battling for the chance to make it to the consolation semifinals.
  • UPDATED AT 5:40 P.M.–Canfora is on deck. Also coming soon are Hillsborough's T.J. Guidice and another Delbarton wrestler, Devon Gobbo.
  • UPDATED AT 5:30 P.M.–After that tough loss in an exciting match for Delbarton, the Green Wave gets it's next shot at 135, when Jeff Canfora takes on Rutherford's John Boyle in wrestlebacks.
  • UPDATED AT 5:18 P.M.–And we have a point, and another two! After heading to a  tiebreaker, Madalgo of Watchung Hills has defeated Rogers of Delbarton, 3-0, to advance to the finals tomorrow. Rogers will now head to the 112-pound consolation finals, where he will battle for third place in the entire state at his class.
  • UPDATED AT 5:15 P.M.–Second overtime period starting after stalemate for the pair.
  • UPDATED AT 5:14 P.M.–Madalgo and Rogers entering one minute overtime period.
  • UPDATED AT 5:12 P.M.–Neither wrestler giving an inch. Still 0-0 after two periods for Madalgo and Rogers.
  • UPDATED AT 5:10 P.M.–Madalgo and Rogers deadlocked at 0-0 after one period.
  • UPDATED AT 5:08 P.M.–Watchung Hills' Mike Madalgo taking on Max Rogers of Delbarton in the 112-pound semifinals.
  • UPDATED AT 5:05 P.M.–Innarella falls, 11-2.
  • UPDATED AT 5:02 P.M.–Innarella able to earn one point, but the Green Wave falls further behind, down 4-1 after second period.
  • UPDATED AT 4:59 P.M.–Innarella still down 2-0, middle of the second period.
  • UPDATED AT 4:58 P.M.–Innarella down 2-0 in the middle of the first period to Carl Buttitta of JFK-Iselin.
  • UPDATED AT 4:55 P.M.–We're just about to begin. Delbarton's Christian Innarella is about to wrestle in wrestlebacks.
  • UPDATED 1:34 P.M.–Come back at 5 p.m. for live updates from the semifinals and more wrestlebacks, which will all lead into tomorrow's consolations and finals. We're getting closer to crowning champions!
  • UPDATED AT 12:40 P.M.—Bernstein fell behind, 9-0, to Capolattano at one point in the second period. Then it was 12-0. It ended with a 15-0 major decision going to Capolattano.
  • Delbarton's Sullivan was ahead, 8-4, at one point before he pinned Kristopher Rahn of Haddonfield with 1:07 remaining.
  • Morristown's Darren Dungee had a back-and-forth match with Kevin Stadtmueller of Absegami. Dungee was ahead, 5-1, early in the match before Stadtmueller made it 6-6. Stadtmueller hit Dungee with a takedown in the first OT for a 8-6 victory.
  • UPDATED AT 12:30 P.M.—Officials waited to start all 215-pounders at once, for some reason. Anyway, Capolattano went up, 2-0, on Bernstein, then hit him with another takedown before the first period ended. Meanwhile, Morristown's Darren Dungee is tied, 0-0, at the end of the first period of his 215-pound bout. And Sullivan, a 215-pounders from Delbarton, is up 6-2. Looks like Morris-area 215-pounders have a reason to be proud.
  • UPDATED AT 12:23 P.M.—Bernstein's taking on Bound Brook's Andrew Campolattano. He entered the weekend as the top-ranked 215-pounder.
  • UPDATED AT 12:12 P.M.—We've got all three of our Patch-area 215-pounders on deck. Big boy time. Meanwhile, Innarella is ahead, 10-5, in his bout. He won.
  • UPDATED AT 12:09 P.M.— Back to Delbarton's Christian Innarella. He's in the second round of wrestlebacks, taking on Paulsboro's John Gentile. If Innarella loses, he's out. He's on mat No. 1, taking shots at Gentile.
  • UPDATED AT 11:48 A.M.—Intile loses, 3-1. Montville still has 215-pounder Tyler Bernstein ahead.
  • UPDATED AT 11:43 A.M.—Monarque takes a 3-0 loss. He walks off mat, head held high. Never really put himself in a position to score. Barber was overwhelming.
  • UPDATED AT 11:41 A.M.—Intile down, 2-0, in the second period. Went down early. Also, Monarque is down, 3-0, to Westfield's Barber in the third period.
  • UPDATED AT 11:35 A.M.—Montville 152-pounder Mike Intile is taking on Devin Geoghegan of Brearley in the quarters. Meanwhile, Jefferson's Mike Monarque is against Christian Barber of Westfield at 152, same round.
  • UPDATED AT 11:26 A.M.—Eric Fajardo of Boonton beat Hillsborough's T.J. Guidice, 4-2, at 140 pounds in quarters.
  • UPDATED AT 11:23 A.M.—Crowd looks bigger this morning. Makes sense, considered the improved matchups. Last night, attendance was announced at more than 9,000. We'll most likely top that today, especially with the 5 p.m. semifinals coming up.
  • UPDATED AT 11:16 A.M.— Meytrott loses, 3-2. He almost escaped with mere seconds remaining in the third period.
  • UPDATED AT 11:12 A.M.—Montville's Parker Meytrott is tied with Matt DiGiovanni of Cranford at 145 pounds, 2-2, in the second period of the wrestlebacks.
  • UPDATED AT 11:11 A.M.— Canfora couldn't escape from the first 30-second tiebreaker. And Richards nailed an escape and a takedown during his for a 9-6 ictory. Thrilling match.
  • UPDATED At 11:06 A.M.—Canfora fell behind Richards, 6-5, as Richards was able to overpower him with about a minute left in the match. But Canfora escaped with 40 seconds left, typing things up. They went into overtime. In OT, the pair started neutral. With 20 second left, Richards almost nailed a takedown. But the pair went out of bounds. Next, tw0 30-second timebreakers.
  • UPDATED AT 11:03 A.M.—Canfora jumped ahead, 5-3, with a takedown near the end of the second period.
  • UPDATED AT 11:02 A.M.—As Canfora tied it up, 2-2, in the second period, Delbarton's Devin Gabbo prepared to hit the mat at 140 pounds against Nutley's Michael Ferinde.
  • UPDATED AT 10:58 A.M.— Canfora wrapped his arms around Richards, but the two twisted out of bounds. Then Richards hit Canfora with a single, putting him ahead, 2-0, with about 40 second to go in the first.
  • UPDATED AT 10:55 A.M.—Are you in Hopatcong, Jefferson, Morristown, Morris Plains, Montville, Warren or Hillsborough? Want to know how your wrestler did? Ask us in the comments.
  • UPDATED AT 10:47 A.M.— Waiting for yet another Delbarton wrestler to hit the mat. Joey Canfora (135 pounds) looks to take on Alexander Richards of St. Peter's Prep. Been on deck for a while now.
  • UPDATED AT 10:37 A.M.—Lopez gave up a point in the third. After the two went into a stalemate, and with 14 seconds left, Hoover nailed a takedown almost out of bounds to take a 4-3 lead. That's how it stayed, and Lopez lost.
  • UPDATED AT 10:34 A.M.—Lopez started the second period on bottom. Hoover couldn't do much, as the 130-pound Delbarton grappler closed up for most of the time. Then Lopez earned an escape with about 20 seconds left in the period, shaking his right leg free from Hoover's grip. They went into the third period with Lopez ahead, 3-1.
  • UPDATED AT 10:30 A.M.—This is quickly becoming the Green Wave show. Delbarton advanced every athlete but one into Saturday. Now, Jorge Lopez (130 pounds) just started his wrestleback match with Ron Hoover of Haddon. Lopez jumped up, 2-0, before Hoover earned an escape.
  • UPDATED AT 10:26 A.M.—Anderson held off Maye. Maye took hard shots within the last minute. But Anderson slipped them for a 3-2 win. He ran off the mat pumping his fist to the wresters' section of the Boardwalk Hall crowd.
  • UPDATED AT 10:23 A.M.— Delbarton's Nick Anderson at 119 pounds went up, 2-0, on Bergen Catholic's Michael Maye in wrestlebacks. Anderson began the third period on top and Maye almost escaped early. Maye did, however, get an escape with about a minute left in the final period.
  • UPDATED AT 10:18 A.M.—Mike Malgaldo of Watchung Hills earned a pin with 13 seconds left in the quarterfinals. Rogers also bagged the win, holding off Corrigan's ride despite stall warning.
  • UPDATED 10:12 A.M.—Rogers jumped up, 3-0, heading into the third round. He started the third period on bottom and almost had a quick escape.
  • UPDATED AT 10:10 A.M.— Keeping up with the Green Wave action, Max Rogers of Delbarton vs. Kevin Corrigan of Toms River South just took mat No. 3 in the quarterfinals. They went right at it, ending the first period scoreless.
  • UPDATED AT 10:06 A.M.—The first Patch-area match? Delbarton's Christian Innarella vs. Connor Muli of Shawnee in wrestlebacks. Innarella jumped ahead, 5-2, real quick. He spent much of the second period riding Muli. Soon, it was 12-3 and Innarella was moving on.
  • UPDATED AT 10 A.M.—Here we go again! We're in Atlantic City providing you live updates from the NJSIAA state wrestling championships at Boardwalk Hall.
