Flood Warning, Residents Asked To Stay Home In Morristown

"Do not drive through flooded roadways," authorities warn on Monday morning as heavy rain continues to fall in Morristown.

MORRISTOWN, NJ — Multiple roads are closed throughout Morristown due to flooding on Monday morning.

"A flood warning is in effect for our area until later this morning. Do not drive through a flooded roadway," the Morristown Department of Public Safety said.

The Morris County Office of Emergency Management said that the National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for Morris County. A flood watch is in effect through Monday afternoon.

Due to the heavy rain and area flooding, Morristown Town Hall will be open at 10 a.m. today, officials announced.

"Watch for fallen tree limbs and power lines. Report any power outages to JCPL," the Morristown Department of Public Safety said.

According to police, Martin Luther King Avenue between Spring and George Streets in Morristown will be blocked until further notice due to flooding. Avoid this location, plan for traffic delays and detours, and consider alternate routes.

In Morris Plains, Tabor Road (Route 53) is closed from Foxwood Drive to Littleton Road due to flooding.

As of around 5 a.m., many areas in Morris County have already received between 2 to 4 inches of rain overnight.

  • Madison: 3.74 inches

And more rain is expected to fall Monday morning.

A flood watch has been issued for the area through 6 p.m. on Dec. 19 as rain continues to fall.

"Rainfall totals of 2.0 to 5.0 inches are expected, with the heaviest rain continuing for a time this morning," said the National Weather Service (NWS). "Flooding is ongoing in several areas given the excessive rainfall on already saturated ground. The steadiest rain this morning should end as some showers into this afternoon."
