Saint Elizabeth University (SEU) was established on a foundation of visionary leadership. Created in 1899 by the Sisters of Charity, SEU broke barriers as one of the first Catholic colleges for women in the country to offer college degrees to women; a radical move in an era when women were largely excluded from higher learning. But the university’s commitment to belonging didn’t stop there. Today, that same spirit of empowerment drives SEU’s mission to support underserved communities through education, advocacy, and direct action.

For over 125 years, SEU has remained true to its founding principles: respect for human dignity, a commitment to justice, and a belief in the power of education to create positive change. This unwavering stance is rooted in the very foundation of Catholic Social Teaching, which was formally established by Pope Leo XIII in 1891 with the encyclical Rerum Novarum, calling for the protection of workers' rights and social justice. These values are reflected not only in the university’s campus culture, but also in its hands-on efforts to address the needs of the community. From offering scholarships and outreach programs to supporting social justice initiatives and environmental sustainability, SEU continues to stand with those who need it most.

Breaking Barriers From the Start

SEU’s story begins with the Sisters of Charity, led by the legacy of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, who founded the order in 1809 with a mission to serve the poor and vulnerable through education and care. When the Sisters of Charity established St. Elizabeth University in 1899, their goal was clear: to provide women with access to higher education and empower them to become leaders and advocates for common good.

At a time when most universities excluded women and marginalized communities, SEU created a space where women could not only gain an education but also build confidence and leadership skills. That foundational commitment laid the groundwork for the university’s ongoing mission.

Education with a Purpose

SEU’s belief that education should serve the greater good is evident in its core academic programs and campus culture. The university actively works to remove barriers to education by providing scholarships and support programs that make higher learning accessible to first-generation students and those from underserved communities.

Initiatives like the Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) and the university’s leadership development programs ensure that students from all backgrounds have the resources they need to succeed. The university also partners with local organizations to provide hands-on learning experiences where students engage with real-world challenges, from homelessness to food insecurity.

SEU’s Mission in Action

SEU’s commitment goes beyond the classroom. The university actively mobilizes students and faculty to engage in community service and advocacy work that addresses the needs of vulnerable populations.

  • Support for the Homeless: SEU students and staff regularly volunteer at shelters and food banks, providing meals and support to those facing housing insecurity.
  • Advocacy for Social Change: The university engages in policy discussions and public outreach efforts to promote equity particularly in education and healthcare.
  • Environmental Responsibility: SEU’s sustainability programs reflect its understanding that environmental responsibility is deeply connected to social integrity. The university promotes recycling, energy efficiency, and community cleanup initiatives to protect both people and the planet.

A Modern Mission Built on Timeless Values

While the world has changed dramatically since SEU’s founding, the university’s core values have remained steadfast. The belief that every individual deserves dignity, respect, and opportunity drives SEU’s ongoing work to create a more just and embracive society.

“Saint Elizabeth University has always been a pioneer in advancing access and opportunity,” said Dr. Gary Crosby, President of Saint Elizabeth University. “As the needs of communities have evolved, we remain committed to evolving with them—finding new and meaningful ways to fulfill our mission of fairness, belonging, and empowerment.”
