I-80 Lanes Reopening Ahead Of Schedule, DOT Says

Lanes have been partially closed for the last few weeks following several sinkhole repairs.

MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — Lanes on I-80 are expected to fully open up ahead of schedule, the NJ Department of Transportation announced.

Due to expedited repairs, westbound lanes should fully reopen this weekend, officials said. This comes weeks after the westbound lanes partially reopened in May.

In an effort to stay ahead of schedule, one of the two westbound lanes that were recently reopened will be closed overnight until Thursday.

All westbound lanes will be closed and detoured Friday evening for “final paving and restriping,” the NJDOT said.

Saturday morning, weather permitting, all three westbound I-80 lanes are expected to be open. The reopening was initially set for June 25, but is now expected 11 days earlier.

Assemblywoman Aura Dunn calls the expedited repairs “a welcome development for commuters, residents, and local businesses alike.”

Eastbound lanes will remain under construction, and the DOT is still expecting a full reopening on June 25. Two eastbound lanes were opened on May 21.

The DOT noted that speed limits are 45 mph through the westbound work zones and 40 mph through the eastbound work zones.

The I-80 traffic issues are a result of several sinkholes that formed after an abandoned mineshaft collapsed in December 2024. Since then, motorists have been dealing with delays and detours while the NJDOT has been working 24 hours a day to repair the roadwork.

The NJDOT has created a timeline for motorists and residents to track the repair schedule.
