Letter: 'Week of Respect' Must Extend Throughout Year
Group asks people remember that "upstanding is cool."
To the Editor:
New Jersey’s new anti-bullying law designates an annual “Week of Respect” beginning the first Monday in October. We at the Center for Tourette Syndrome and Associated Disorders would like to remind readers that the lessons of this initiative extend far beyond the education system. The principles of respect, tolerance, inclusion and acceptance must be utilized frequently in a civilized society and we as adults have a responsibility to live these values in front of our children.
The Center is proud to continue its anti-bullying message through its peer and faculty in-service programs in public schools and colleges throughout the state. We applaud the state’s new anti-bullying initiative. It clearly parallels the work we continue to do–standing up for those who are not always able to advocate for themselves. Our goal is for children and adults of all ages to understand and embrace the differences that make each of us unique. In the coming weeks, NJCTS will launch a new campaign reminding students that "Upstanders are Cool," and urging them to stand up against bullying and not be afraid to do the right thing when it comes to showing compassion. It’s a lesson we can all benefit from.
