Morristown Declares June 2025 LGBTQ+ Pride Month
"Pride Month serves as a monument to both celebrate its achievements and reflect on the work that remains," Mayor Tim Dougherty said.
MORRISTOWN, NJ — Morristown officials declared June LGBTQ+ Pride Month during Thursday night’s council meeting.
The Morristown council has declared June 2025 LGBTQ+ Pride Month, citing the community’s culture and its progress towards equality.
“Pride Month serves as a monument to both celebrate its achievements and reflect on the work that remains,” Mayor Tim Dougherty said. “It is a time to reaffirm our commitment to protecting the rights, dignity, and freedoms of LGBTQ+ individuals, and to foster unity through celebration and visibility.”

Dougherty cited the Stonewall Uprising, a pivotal moment in the LGBTQ+ rights movement. The Uprising refers to a series of demonstrations following a police raid of Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in Greenwich Village, on June 28, 1969.
Since then, leaps and bounds have been made in the LGBTQ+ community’s equality; however, work is still left to be done. According to a report from the FBI, anti-LGBTQ hate crimes have increased in recent years.

“Morristown’s vibrancy is rooted in the rich diversity of its residents, including their ethnic, cultural, racial, gender, and sexual identities," Dougherty said. “All residents of Morristown are encouraged to support our LGBTQ+ community, and to help ensure that everyone can live openly, safely, and with dignity, bolstered by the support of their peers, educators, community members, and local leaders.”
Those interested in supporting the LGBTQ+ community can do so by attending local Pride events. Annual Pride festivals are held in several nearby towns, including Mendham Township, Morris Township, and a county-wide celebration at the County College of Morris.
