MORRISTOWN, NJ — After two years, the Morristown Medical Center has announced the completion of its emergency department expansion.

The project, which cost just shy of $27 million to build, began back in 2022. The plan was to expand and modernize the center’s Sameth Emergency Department.

The plans were originally presented in response to the rising number of patients at Morristown Medical Center. According to Atlantic Health officials, the center receives some of the highest numbers of patients in the country, with more than 110,000 patients in 2024 alone.

Officials added that throughout construction, the facility was still able to care for hundreds of patients every day.

“We approached this project with the goal to improve the experience of our patients and their loved ones, while creating a space that meets the needs of our community and our team members,” said Trish O’Keefe, PhD, RN, President, Morristown Medical Center. “I thank all our physicians and team members for working through the construction process and our patients for their understanding and patience during this time.”

In 2022, the Morristown Medical Center’s Emergency Department had 78 treatment areas. Following the expansion, the facility now has 120.

Officials said not only did the project result in a modernized space, but provided “necessary enhancements” to make room for the latest technology, treatment areas, triage, intake, behavioral health, and more in adult and pediatric emergency departments.

The Morristown Medical Center does have plans to expand even further, however. Officials said that they are awaiting approval to add a larger parking garage, a medical specialty building, a new patient care pavilion, and two more floors to the Goryeb Children’s Hospital.

“With sustained high volume at Morristown Medical Center, additional beds are critical to our commitment to providing extraordinary care and to our patient flow and throughput efforts,” said O’Keefe. “Across our campus, we continue to pursue projects to help us continue to meet and exceed the needs of our community.”
