Revolutionary War Icon To Return To Morristown After 200 Years

American Revolution General Marquis de Lafayette is getting quite the welcome back party since his last Morristown visit 200 years ago.

MORRISTOWN, NJ — History buffs are getting a blast from the past soon, because Founding Father Marquis de Lafayette is making his triumphant return to Morristown.

On Sunday, July 13, the town is hosting a celebration to “Welcome Lafayette Back To Morristown” at Morristown Green from noon to 3:30 p.m. The celebration will feature a Lafayette impersonator, history experts, a parade, and more.

Lafayette played a critical role during the American Revolution. A French aristocrat, Lafayette fought alongside the Continental Army as a general at just 19 years old.

The celebration will commemorate Lafayette’s 1825 visit to Morristown, a vital site during the war. He was the last living American Revolution general at that time.

A parade and welcome presentation will kick off the event at 12:45 p.m., followed by toasts, cannon salutes, traditional bell-ringing, music, and more.

Participants can expect Lafayette to be joined by other impersonators and history experts. Additionally, a pop-up Lafayette museum will be open at 51 South Street from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Activities for kids will also be available, as well as free ice cream and food trucks.

Those who can’t make it, or who are looking to learn even more about the Revolutionary War general, are invited to attend Lafayette: Human Rights Champion Symposium at the Morris County Library in Whippany the following day.

On Monday, July 14, reenactors and experts will host a presentation of Lafayette’s achievements from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
