MORRISTOWN, NJ - It has been six years since the Fiber Fairy, a lifelong Morristown resident, spoke to Patch with the condition of anonymity, and shared her story of providing homemade hats, gloves and scarves to those in need.

And they are now back, adorning the Morristown Green for anyone who needs them.

During our initial interview with the Fiber Fairy, named so by a family member, she said that the anonymity was not about protection for herself, but to not detract from the message.

"The reason I wish to remain anonymous is because it really isn't about me," she said. "It's about showing others in the community that each and every one of us has the potential to make a difference in the lives of those around us."

A teenager at the time, the Fiber Fairy was initially inspired by a report from the Ottawa Citizen about scarves left around monuments of Canadian heroes, and it wasn't long after that George Washington and his compatriots around town had their own offerings.

Family members like the Fairy's younger sister "Yarnia" and "aunt Woolly Mammoth" set about the Morristown Green leaving their own hats and scarves each with the attached note: "If you need this to help keep you warm in this cold weather, then it is now yours. Life is good. Pass it on."

While time and life and moving out of the county in 2018 made the original Fiber Fairy unable to continue the project as intensely as she has in previous years, the project continued strong with friends and volunteers, although deliveries weren't as frequent.

What hasn't changed, is the quality of the items left on the Green, nor the personal notes attached to them.

The goal of the initiative has always been to shed light on the homeless issue in Morristown by making free winter hats and scarves available to people in need, placing them on statues on the Green.

How you can help:

The best way you can help the Morristown Fiber Fairy movement is by donating winter hats, gloves, and scarves, and non-perishable food or making a cash donation to places in the Morristown area that are actively helping the homeless population. Such as:

Those who want to donate a hat and scarf and leave them on a statue please pick a date by messaging their Facebook page. They place hats and scarves from November through late March.
