New Tax Estimate Letters Coming To Morristown Residents

The town is undergoing its first property revaluation since 2004, and property owners got tax estimates last year that may be incorrect.

MORRISTOWN, NJ —Morristown property owners are getting new property tax estimate letters that may be much different than ones they received last fall, the mayor said.

The town is going through a property revaluation assessment, with inspections done by Appraisal Systems, Inc. Property owners received letters in October, letting them know what their estimated tax bill will be with the new reappraisal — but it didn't include certain calculations, Mayor Tim Dougherty said.

"The information that went out based on estimated taxes with the new revaluation were not done with the adding of the county assessment and the school assessment, so the numbers have changed," he said in a video message Monday.

Those numbers were not finalized until after the new year.

Homeowners will start getting new letters in the mail soon with an updated amount of what the tax assessor estimates their property taxes will be, the mayor said.

"They are re-sending all the information town-wide," he said, apologizing to residents for any inconvenience or confusion.

Property owners who want to appeal their property's assessed value must do so by May 1.

With questions, contact the mayor's office at 973-292-6629, the town tax assessor's office at 973-292-6668, or contact the appraisal company.

This is the first revaluation in the 20,000-person community since 2004, and it comes after years of major redevelopment projects throughout the town.

Neighboring municipalities pushed for the revaluation, claiming the town was not paying its fair share of regional taxes.
