Phone Scammers Are Impersonating Cops And Morris Co. Sheriff's Deputies, Officials Say

MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — The Morris County Sheriff's Office and multiple police departments are alerting residents about a phone scam where the callers claim to be law enforcement.
The scammers are able to make the caller I.D. look like the police or sheriff's office is calling, officials said. Authorities are asking residents to be alert, and also to discuss the scam with family members who may be vulnerable to this type of crime.
In this scam, callers claim to be from the Morris Co. Sheriff's Office or a local police department, and tell the would-be victim that they need to deliver money or face immediate arrest, said officials.

The callers are using actual officers' names, and are able to manipulate the call so it looks like it's coming from an official number, authorities said.
Residents in multiple towns have called local police or the sheriff's office to report this scam, officials added. This includes (but is not limited to) Florham Park, Mendham Borough, Chester Police, Chatham Township, and Montville Township.

The sheriff's office is reminding residents never to provide an unknown person with sensitive personal information, money, or access to any assets.
