Pets Named Betty White Emerge At NJ Rescues As Animal World Honors TV Icon

MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — Fido, Fluffy, Betty White? The TV icon's recent death has inspired fans and furry-friend lovers to donate to animal shelters and organizations. In Morris County, at least two very good girls affiliated with local rescues share her name.

The Madison-based St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center named a kitten "Betty White," honoring the longtime animal advocate. The Second Chance Pet Adoption League in Morris Plains named its first female rescue dog of the year "Betty White."

Betty the Kitty currently lives in a foster home and isn't ready for adoption yet, according to St. Hubert's. But the Madison-based pet rescue says to keep checking its website to see when she's available.

The organization will also participate in the "Betty White Challenge." White died on New Year's Eve at age 99 — just short of her centennial, which would have been Monday. Her namesake challenge went viral on social media, encouraging fans and animal lovers to donate to local pet rescues and shelters in her name.

St. Hubert's set up a webpage in which people can donate in White's memory.

Additionally, St. Hubert's will hold a "Golden Girls" senior-pet adoption event Friday through Sunday. The organization will offer "pay as you wish" adoption feed for animals 8 years and older. See all available St. Hubert's pets here.

Meet Betty White (Of Second Chance)

As the Second Chance Pet Adoption League noted on social media, they don't tend to follow the crowd. But there's reason to believe White would have appreciated the rescue's dark-humored social media posts and misfit dogs, so the rescue is jumping on the challenge.

Second Chance named its first female rescue of the year after the actress. And this pooch is very much the type of "underdog" that the Morris Plains shelter embraces.

When Second Chance found Betty White (the dog), she wasn't in good shape. In fact, the organization said on Facebook that she "looks about 99 years old, and was a rack of bones but puts all 5lbs of that force into biting any hands coming near her when she’s terrified. In other words, she’s pretty much perfect."
