The 'Legend' Continues at Morristown's Got Talent

Josh Klein and the Legends brings fusion to the stage Feb. 29.

The "Legend" continues.

Three years ago, guitarist Josh Klein wanted to get a band together after his last one broke up. But, this Morris Township resident couldn't find anyone available on a regular basis in the area. So, he said, "we played with whoever we could."

And, Josh Klein and the Legends was born.

On Feb. 29, one iteration of that "legendary" four-piece–including New York City drummer Greg Sgrulloni, Glen Ridge bassist Eric Swiontkowski and keyboardist Lucas Kadar will perform Bill Cobham's fusion classic "Stratus" at .

"I don't really keep a band together," the 27-year-old laughed. "Whoever can make it to the gig."

While these members are the same as those seen earlier this year at Klein said often one might be swapped out for another, depending on who is available. At this point, there are between 10 to 15 on the rotating list, he said.

Still, given the band leader's gushing at this line-up, he may want to try and get them together as often as possible. "I feel really lucky to be playing with them," he said.

Drummer Sgrulloni–whom Klein calls "Torch"–has been dubbed by the guitarist "one of the best drummers in the world.

"There's no one I'd rather be playing with," Klein said.

The Class of 2002 graduate began playing guitar in his early teen years, cutting his teeth on such acts as Phish and Pink Floyd. As such, he has taken a liking to long-form, improvisational play, something the Morristown's Got Talent audience might get a hint of during his performance, which he has dubbed "Power Fusion," a mix of Jazz, rock, funk and blues.

During the interview, Klein revealed a little secret: "I secretly don't want to win," because the winner needs to wait a year before performing again at the event. "I'd love to be able to do this every year," he said.

Either path for the guitarist is a victory, so either way, he'll be happy. "It's just about playing, and that's how it should be," Klein said.
