Trump Tweets Support Of Webber In NJ-11

This appears to be the first endorsement President Trump has given in the Garden State this election.

MORRISTOWN, NJ — President Trump has thrown his support behind Republican Jay Webber in the race for New Jersey's 11th district congressional seat, tweeting out an endorsement Thursday afternoon.

"He is outstanding in every way. Strong on Borders, loves our Military and our Vets. Big Crime fighter. Jay has my Full and Total Endorsement!" Trump's tweet read.

Webber retweeted it, thanking Trump for his support. "I look forward to working with you to make the people in #NJ11 and across America even more prosperous and free!" Webber wrote.

Trump has not been shy in endorsing Republican candidates nationwide in the upcoming general election, nor was he shy in endorsing candidates in the primaries earlier this year, but much of that support focused on candidates outside of New Jersey. He did not endorse any primary candidates in NJ-11, and it appears this is the first endorsement he's given in the state.

The race between Webber and Democrat Mikie Sherrill has heated up in recent months, with both sides garnering high-profile endorsements, including Vice President Mike Pence for Webber and former Vice President Joe Bidden for Sherrill.

"Assemblyman Webber was Governor Christie's man in Trenton, and he will be President Trump's man in Washington. We know from his record that he consistently puts his own ideology ahead of those he represents. We've seen it time and time again with his vocal support for the tax hike bill, his vote against equal pay for equal work, and his repeated votes against women's reproductive health. We need new leadership in Washington, and Assemblyman Webber would simply be more of the same," Sherrill said in a statement.

The two are vying for the seat being vacated by longtime Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen, who has represented the district for 23 years. The district is centered on Morris County, and includes several towns in Essex, Passaic and Sussex Counties (a full list is included at the end of the article). Although traditionally considered a solidly Republican area, the Cook Political Report is now considering the race to "lean Democratic."
