I-80 Westbound To Partially Reopen This Week: Here's When

Traffic to resume after months of construction.

MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — Two lanes on I-80 westbound are expected to reopen this week, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation. Officials say that the lanes will open up late Friday night, May 30, weather permitting.

Paving is expected to be completed late Thursday night or early Friday morning. Officials noted that the roadways will need time to cool and harden before being striped, which cannot be completed when roadways are wet.

The I-80 westbound Exit 34B detour will be removed following the reopening of the lanes.

Authorities said that the speed limit will be 45 mph through the work zone, and motorists are required to use caution when passing through.

This follows the NJDOT reopening two lanes of I-80 eastbound this past Wednesday.

The I-80 traffic issues are a result of several sinkholes that formed after an abandoned mineshaft collapsed in December 2024. Since then, motorists have been dealing with delays and detours while the NJDOT has been working 24 hours a day to repair the sinkholes.

Both directions of I-80 are expected to fully reopen on June 25. To track the NJDOT’s progress on repairs, click here.
