Election Results For NJ-28: Burgess, Tucker, Hall Declared Winners
Candidates were Renee Burgess (Senate), and Cleopatra Tucker, Garnet Hall, Joy Freeman, Willie Jetti (Assembly).

NEW JERSEY — New Jersey voters cast ballots in races across the state on Tuesday, including contests for senate and assembly seats in the 28th District. Polling places closed at 8 p.m.

In the Senate’s 28th District, incumbent Renee Burgess (Democrat) ran unopposed for a four-year term in the Senate.

In the Assembly’s 28th District, incumbent Cleopatra Tucker and Garnet Hall ran on the Democratic Party ticket. Joy Freeman and Willie Jetti were on the ballot for the Republican Party.
With 96 percent of votes reported, Tucker and Hall have been declared as the winners. Here are the uncertified results as per the Associated Press and NJ Spotlight News (two open seats):
- Cleopatra Tucker – 17,112 votes (46.2%)
- Garnet Hall – 16,673 votes (45.0%)
- Joy Freeman – 1,750 votes (4.7%)
- Willie Jetti – 1,478 votes (4.0%)
This is the first general election that is being held using the 2023 Legislative district map that was approved last year. The redistricting effort – done once every 10 years –shuffled some towns around, putting them in different districts and giving them new elected representatives in the Statehouse. The 28th District now includes the municipalities of Irvington, Maplewood, Newark and South Orange in Essex County; and Hillside in Union County.
