Mayor: "During the Festival of Lights, let us rededicate our lives to illuminating this world with the brightest of all lights: love."
NEWARK, NJ — A menorah lighting event will take place in Newark on Wednesday, Dec. 17 to celebrate Hanukkah, the Jewish eight-day Festival of Lights.
The city’s 2025 menorah lighting is scheduled for 4 p.m. in front of City Hall, 920 Mayor Kenneth A. Gibson Boulevard.
“Hanukkah celebrates the victory of a courageous people fighting against intolerance and oppression to uphold their identity and religious traditions,” Mayor Ras Baraka said.

“This week, we are devastated to see yet again, all these thousands of years later, that dark instincts remain lodged in small-hearted, fearful people,” Baraka continued, referencing a terror attack that killed at least 15 people in Australia last weekend.
“In English, ‘Hanukkah,’ translates to ‘dedication,’” Baraka said. “So during the Festival of Lights, let us rededicate our lives to illuminating this world with the brightest of all lights: love – a love powerful enough to include, embrace and liberate us all.”
