A Prestigious Scholar at Newark Library and an Obama Rally

The week ahead in Newark

The Newark Public Library, 5 Washington St., is hosting “An Evening with Henry Louis Gates” Tuesday at 7 pm. Gates, the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor at Harvard University, is editor of The Root.com and one of the nation’s most respected scholars of African-American culture. The event is being hosted by Mayor Cory Booker and is part of the library’s 125th anniversary celebration.

The Newark Municipal Council is holding a rally and march to support the reelection of President Barack Obama Saturday beginning at 11 am at Lincoln Park. Also taking part in the event, which will be held until 3 pm and ends at city hall, 920 Broad St., will be the Newark Knights Motorcycle Club, the Newark Bronze Shields and other organizations.

The Newark Fire Department becomes even stronger Tuesday, when an additional 30 recruits are sworn in. This academy class consists entirely of military veterans -- the first time in recent memory all members of a recruit class had served in the armed forces. The ceremony takes place at noon at New Hope Baptist Church, 106 Sussex Ave.

How about a blast of live music and some fresh produce from the farms of New Jersey? The NDD Farmers Market is Thursday at 80 Park Plaza (in front of PSE&G) beginning at 11 am.
