Newark police arrested a city man Tuesday who they said had just robbed an Ironbound bank, the department said in a statement.
Alfred Ferguson, 55, walked into the Garden State Community Bank, 37 Wilson Ave.,* around 3:30 pm wearing a hooded sweatshirt and bandana over his face and announced a robbery. Ferguson threatened bank employees and climbed over the safety glass before leaving the bank with an “undisclosed” amount of money, police said.
Responding officers broadcast a description of Ferguson, who was then arrested without incident nearby at 73 Chambers St. while riding a bicycle. The stolen money was found in Ferguson’s backpack.
"The officers involved in today's arrest of this bank robbery suspect demonstrated tremendous professionalism. Due to the quick broadcast of suspect information and a timely response by our officers we were able to arrest this bank robber without any injuries or incident,” Police Director Samuel DeMaio said. “I commend all those officers involved from both our communications and patrol divisions who work together daily to keep our neighborhoods safe."
*The name of the bank originally reported was incorrect.
