Booker Officially Quits as Mayor; Senate Swearing-In is Thursday

Booker says he is 'not leaving Newark'

After more than seven years, Mayor Cory Booker officially ended his tenure in city hall Wednesday afternoon, when he submitted an official letter of resignation.

“Serving as the mayor of Newark, New Jersey has been one of the greatest honors of my life.  Since taking office more than seven years ago, I’ve had the privilege to work closely with countless residents, municipal employees, elected officials, community leaders and others to move Newark forward.  It was not easy, but together, we have brought incredible positive change to our city and set the stage for this momentum to continue in the coming years,” Booker wrote to the city clerk.

His resignation takes effect at midnight.

Booker was elected to the US Senate Oct. 16, defeating Republican challenger Steve Lonegan by more than 10 points. He is to be sworn in to his new office noon Thursday.

Booker went on to write that he “is not leaving Newark,” but will continue to serve its residents alongside all other New Jerseyans.

Luis Quintana, as acting city council president, will take over as acting mayor upon Booker's departure. The council then has 30 days to select an interim mayor who will serve until elections next May.

Quintana, however, is widely expected to be chosen for the interim slot.
