Essex County Sheriff Election Finalized: Jones Will Replace Fontoura

There's a new sheriff in town: Amir Jones. Here are the final results of his 2024 showdown with Nicholas Pansini.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — There's a new sheriff in Essex County: Amir Jones.

On Tuesday, the Essex County Clerk's Office confirmed to Patch that the results from the 2024 general election have been certified in the wake of Election Day, which took place on Nov. 5.

This year’s contest for Essex County sheriff was unusually competitive due to Armando Fontoura’s retirement. Fontoura, a Democrat, served in the seat for decades, routinely winning elections by wide margins. See Related: Essex County’s Longest-Tenured Sheriff Won’t Seek Re-Election

A heated primary election took place in June, with Amir Jones beating out Gary Nash for the Democratic Party nomination, and Nicholas Pansini triumphing over Robert Bianco for the Republican Party nod.

Jones and Pansini went head-to-head in the general election. Here are the certified results, as per the clerk's office:

  • Amir Jones – 212,052 votes (72.65%)
  • Nicholas Pansini – 79,812 votes (27.35%)
