Free Stroke Screening at UMDNJ Monday, Oct. 29

Event is part of global awareness initiative

UMDNJ - The University Hospital is offering free stroke screenings next Monday,* Oct. 29 from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm.

The screenings, which will include blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol, will be held at the UMDNJ Dental School, 110 Bergen St., C-Level Atrium.

The screenings are being held on World Stroke Day, an awareness-raising initiative sponsored by the World Stroke Organization, which has 1,200 members in 80 countries.

According to the WSO, stroke attacks 15 million people worldwide every year. As part of its educational campaign, WSO is promoting an overarching theme of “1 in 6” to highlight the global impact of stroke, which claims one life every six seconds.

The local impact of stroke is just as devastating.

“While stroke is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide, the impact is most severe among African Americans and Latinos who represent 74% of the population of Newark,” said Andrea Hidalgo, MD, Director of the Cerebrovascular Program at UMDNJ-The University Hospital. “These groups have a high stroke risk, the least access to affordable preventive and emergency care, and the highest rates of disability after a stroke.”
