Lawmakers Mark One-Year Anniversary of Sandy and a Mayoral Candidates Forum
The week ahead on Newark Patch

This week in Newark, the four declared candidates for mayor in 2014 -- Shavar Jeffries, Darrin Sharif, Anibal Ramos and Ras Baraka -- will take part in a candidates’ forum Thursday. Oct. 24 at Science Park High School, 260 Norfolk St. The event -- which is free and open to the public == begins at 6 pm.
On Tuesday, Rep. Donald Payne will be in Newark with other members of the state Congressional delegation to mark the one-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy. The lawmakers will meet at PSEG headquarters to discuss ways to prepare for future disasters, including by strengthening the power grid. More than 95 percent of Newark homes and businesses lost power in the immediate aftermath of Sandy.
Also this week, the Newark Municipal Council is expected to discuss replacing Mayor Cory Booker, who will be leaving city hall soon to join the US Senate. Booker’s successor will only serve in an interim capacity until mayoral elections next year.
