Lecture Thursday Explores Anti-Irish Riot in Newark
Talk to be given at Seton Hall

Pirates of Irish Persuasion & Extraction (PIPE), Seton Hall University’s Irish cultural society, is hosting a talk on the 1854 Know-Nothing riot in Newark, which targeted Irish immigrants in the city.
The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be held Thursday at 7:30 pm in the Beck Rooms on the ground floor of the Walsh Library at Seton Hall University in South Orange.
Giving the lecture will be Paul Ferris and the Rev. Augustine Curley, a Benedictine monk of the Newark Abbey.

The speakers will explain the motivations behind this attack on St. Mary’s Church, including general anti-immigrant sentiment, as well as the specific effects that this attack had on the Irish-American and immigrant community in the area.
