Most Newark City Services Closed for Columbus Day Monday

Changes to trash collection schedule in effect

All non-uniformed city services, including the Newark Municipal Court, will be closed on Monday in observance of the Columbus Day holiday. Police, fire, and other uniformed emergency services will be unaffected, city hall announced.

Trash pick-ups, including recycling, that would normally occur on Monday will take place Thursday. Residents should not put out their garbage on Oct. 14, as doing so may result in a fine. On Thursday, Oct. 17, on their normal collection days, residents must place their refuse at their curbs by 6 am. Residents whose trash is collected by a private contractor will not be affected by the holiday schedule.

The Department of Child and Family Well-Being’s inspection services, transportation for seniors, the WIC program and health clinic, including the free immunization program, will not operate on Monday. In addition, the Division of Vital Statistics will be closed. Residents will not be able to apply for permits, birth certificates, name-change certificates or marriage licenses, nor pay water or tax bills at City Hall.
