New Essex County Sheriff Appointees Include Trailblazing Promotion
Amir Jones announced two key leadership appointments within the Essex County Sheriff's Office.
ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Essex County’s first African American sheriff recently gave a round of applause for two recent appointments in the department – including another trailblazing promotion.
Last week, Sheriff Amir Jones announced two key leadership appointments within the Essex County Sheriff’s Office. Both took effect immediately.
According to a news release from the sheriff’s office:

- “Deputy Chief Arthur Jorge, of the Newark Police Division, has been appointed Acting Executive Undersheriff. A seasoned law enforcement leader with deep operational experience, Jorge will serve in this role while on special assignment from the Newark Police Division. He will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Sheriff’s Office and report directly to Sheriff Jones.”
- “Captain Zipporah Thomas-Jenkins will be promoted to Acting Chief, making history as both the first woman and the first African American woman to hold this position in the department’s history. Known for her leadership, professionalism, and commitment to the community, Thomas-Jenkins will report directly to Acting Executive Undersheriff Jorge.”
“These appointments reflect my commitment to building a capable, experienced leadership team that will serve the people of Essex County with integrity and purpose,” Jones said.
“Together, they bring a wealth of experience and a shared commitment to public service that will help guide the Sheriff’s Office into a new era,” Jones added.
