Newark Seeks Applications For Auxiliary Police Program

From The City of Newark: Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose announce that the Department of Public Safety is currently accepting applications for the Newark Auxiliary Police Program.

These volunteers will provide public safety support to the Newark Police Division in the areas of vehicular and pedestrian traffic control, crowd and assembly control, security of federal, state, county or local government buildings and during states of emergencies.

Auxiliary Police members will offer police assistance in maintaining law and order on behalf of the public and will provide security during disasters and during scheduled or unscheduled events. They may also be assigned to secure the city’s essential industrial sites, utility and power stations, sewage systems, water distribution facilities and transportation facilities.

“Community involvement is an important focus of our work to make Newark safer. The auxiliary police volunteers represent community involvement at its best: citizens getting directly involved in important police functions,” Mayor Baraka said. “I encourage residents to learn more about our auxiliary police and seriously consider becoming involved.”

Director Ambrose added that the Auxiliary Police Program is another important step the Newark Police Division is taking to welcome community members to participate in public safety. “Through their direct involvement, the men and women recruited to serve will be afforded the authority to work alongside police in keeping our city’s residents and visitors safe.”

Training for Auxiliary Police members will include statutory topics required of regular police officers, including use of force, weapons proficiency, right to know, hazardous materials awareness and other topics mandated by the Chief of Police.
