Newark Shelter Offering Hot Meals -- and Safety

JFK now open, receiving residents

The city’s shelter at the JFK Recreation Center, 211 W. Kinney St., had begun to receive evacuees as of about 5 pm tonight. About 55 people were in the shelter, said Marsha McGowan, health officer with the city of Newark.

The shelter has room for several dozen more residents, McGowan also said, adding that it will likely remain open until after the storm recedes later this week.

“We’re going to be here as long as we’re needed,” McGowan said.

Cots were laid out on the gymnasium floor Monday and medical personnel were on hand to meet basic needs, McGowan said. Those who require serious medical care, however, are urged to use hospital emergency rooms.

People using the shelters can shower, power up electronic devices and can also bring pets. Refrigeration is available for medications, McGowan also said. The Red Cross is providing hot meals. Evacuees are also being encouraged to advise  family members know of their whereabouts, McGowan also said.

McGowan also stressed that prescriptions cannot be filled at the shelter, however.

The city is also assisting homeless residents. That shelter is located at 224 Sussex Ave.
