NJ Transit Strike May Cause Bus Traffic In Downtown Newark Next Week

Newark residents can expect extra traffic downtown if the NJ Transit train engineer strike continues next week, officials say.

NEWARK, NJ — Newark residents can expect extra bus traffic downtown if the NJ Transit train engineer strike continues next week, public safety officials say.

Contract negotiations between NJ Transit and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen failed Thursday night, kicking off a complete suspension of rail service on Friday.

The Newark Department of Public Safety said that if the strike isn’t settled over the weekend, the extra commuter buses are expected to impact local traffic in the downtown area starting on Monday, May 19.

Buses will be lined up at the following locations beginning at 2 p.m., authorities said:

  • Mulberry Street between Market Street and Lafayette Street
  • Columbia Street between Edison Place and Lafayette Street

The area of Mayor Kenneth A. Gibson Boulevard and Market Street will also be impacted, Newark officials said.

Drivers are advised to anticipate delays and plan alternate routes, authorities said.
