Residents Urged to Leave Certain Parts of West Ward

Councilman Ron Rice, Booker announce additional flood-prone areas

West Ward Councilman Ron Rice has announced that people living in the areas listed below should evacuate immediately, before the full brunt of Hurricane Sandy arrives at around 3 pm Monday afternoon. These areas are highly flood-prone.

They are: Ivy Street and Kerrigan Boulevard; West End Avenue and 18th Avenue, Maybaum and Tremont avenues; and Kerrigan Boulevard and Varsity Road.

The city’s main shelter is the JFK Recreation Center, 211 W. Kinney St. The shelter is pet friendly. While there will be supplies there, residents are still urged to bring along extra clothes, medications, important documents and supplies for children and infants, like games and diapers.

Those who need a ride to the shelter might be able to get transport from the city, especially if you call before the storm hits. To inquire about transportation, call the non-emergency number at 973-733-4311.
