The Bears and Scares, Batman and Lead Screening and More This Week

The week ahead in Newark

Grown-up roller skating fans, take note: There’s going to be a “Grown and Sexy Adult Skate Night” Tuesday beginning at 9 pm. Admission is $8 for the event, which is being held at 7th and Clifton avenues.

For those who want to get mobile but without the wheels, the Downtown Walking Club is holding tours throughout the week. Tours will be held at various times throughout the day in the heart of the city. For more information click here.

Remember the college-band movie “Drumline”? Feel like catching a live-action version of the heart-pounding classic? Then check out the show at NJPAC Friday beginning at 8 pm. Click here for more information.

We’re in trick-or-treating season, after all, so why not treat yourself to some spine-tingling thrills -- if you dare, that is! The second annual Stadium of Screams haunted attraction is open on selected dates this week and next at Bears Stadium on Broad Street. Click here for dates and times.

It’s national Lead Poison Prevention Week, and the city is doing its bit to combat the condition, which disproportionately affects inner-city children. The city is hosting two days of events: The first will be held on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the Department of Child and Family Well-Being, at 110 William St. The second will take place on Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the New Community Corporation Youth & Education Center, located at 72 Hayes St.

At both events, there will be activities for the whole family. On Thursday, activities will also include free lead screening, glucose and blood pressure testing, and appearances by Dusty the Dog, Batman, and Leadie Gaga. Information sessions will make presentations to Newark residents about home safety, lead awareness, weatherization, recalled toys, Medicaid, and “healthy homes.”

As part of ManufactureNJ Week, a celebration focusing on the role manufacturing plays in the state’s economy, several partners will come together Tuesday at Essex County College, 303 University Ave., to host an open house and networking event – a "Celebration of Manufacturing Careers" – that will connect Essex County manufacturers, technical students, schools, job seekers, local leaders, and communities.  The open house will be held from  9 am to noon, with a documentary viewing to take place afterward.
