Two Charged in Slaying of Newark Bodega Worker

Victim tried to foil robbery of family business last month

A man and a teenager have been arrested for the murder last month of Jamil Bader, an 18-year-old father gunned down while he worked in his family’s Clinton Avenue bodega.

Tyrique Spruell, 21, was arrested Wednesday night and the 16-year-old youth Thursday morning, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and Newark police said in a statement. Both are from Newark.

Judge Peter Vazquez set Spruell’s bail at $750,000 Thursday. The 16-year-old is being held at the Essex County Youth House.

The murder of Bader, who died trying to stop a robbery at the store, shocked the community and spurred calls for additional police protection for city businesses.

"I am very pleased that through the dedicated work of the investigators assigned to this case we were able to arrest the individuals responsible for the senseless and tragic murder of one of our city's youth,” Police Director Samuel DeMaio said Thursday. “Again, I extend my heartfelt prayers to the victims' family and loved ones and hope they derive some level of solace from these arrests."
