U.S. News looked at more than 2,100 graduate programs and surveyed more than 23,000 academics and professionals in its annual rankings, continually updating its methodology and adding new programs to keep them relevant to new and prospective students, according to a news release.

This year, U.S. News updated the methodology in its law school rankings to include the bar passage performance in every state where a school’s graduates took a bar exam. Previously, the indicator only included the state with the most graduates taking the exam for the first time.

And for the second year, law school rankings took into consideration data on both the average debt incurred by law school students and the percent who had to borrow money to attend — measures that U.S. News said provide more context to prospective students facing higher education costs.

Also for the second year, the medical school rankings focused on underserved populations. Specifically, these rankings look at racial and ethnic diversity among medical school student populations, as well as which schools have the most graduates practicing in primary care, in rural areas, and in health professional shortage areas.

Nationally, the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business and the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School tied for the best business schools offering a full-time MBA program. Northwestern University’s Kellogg School and Stanford University tied for third place.

Among law schools, Yale, Stanford and the University of Chicago ranked first, second and third, respectively.

And among research medical schools, Harvard University and New York University were ranked first and second, respectively. Columbia University, Johns Hopkins University and the University of California-San Francisco tied for third place.
