Friends, Fitness and Fun: Not A Dull Moment At New Milford's Senior Activity Center

Nestled on a small quiet corner on River Road is . According to the center's director, Mary Beth Hubbard, the Senior Activity Center services anywhere between 75 to 100 seniors each day.

The center provides a network of services, resources, activities, and social and community involvement not only for New Milford seniors, but for seniors from neighboring communities that do not have a dedicated senior center, such as River Edge and Oradell. 

Hubbard told Patch that the exercise classes are very popular and attract quite a number of seniors daily. Classes offered include yoga, Tai-Chi and toning and stretching exercises. For those with more sedentary interests there is bingo, pinochle, bridge, Mah Jong, painting and arts and crafts. 

The center also provides transportation to and from doctor appointments, to and from Shop Rite on Thursdays, and to and from the malls during the holiday season. Additionally, lectures and trips are offered. The next trip is to Atlantic City on June 14. 

Lunch is provided daily Monday through Friday by the county and availabe for a suggested donation of $1.25. The lunch menu is prepared by a county dietician, so it is well balanced and healthy. A light breakfast is offered on Saturdays.

Program Staff, Debbie Putrino, who is also a registered nurse, said that for many of the seniors that come to the center it is like their home. 

"Everyone is like family here," she said. "Everyone looks after each other."

Hubbard added, "They look forward to being here and we look forward to them being here everyday."

If you are interested in joining the New Milford Senior Activity Center, you can register at the center with Mary Beth Hubbard. The Center is opened Monday through Friday 8 am to 4 pm and on Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm.
