School Opens, Regular Meeting Schedules Resume This Week

Boards and Commissions return to their normal meeting schedule as school opens in the week ahead.

This week not only marks the unofficial end of summer, but it also marks a return to normal routine. will resume its regular hours. Offices will be open Monday through Friday 8am to 4pm. 

There will be a meeting of the Environmental Commission Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 7pm in the upstairs conference room of Borough Hall. 

All New Milford students return to school Wednesday, Sept. 5. This year not only welcomes the addition of a Kindergarten class at Berkley Elementary School, but it also sees the continued implementation of changes designed to raise the bar of education in New Milford.

 is changing the way science and social studies is taught. Rather than having a 40 minute class in each subject, there will be 80 minute blocks of science and 80 minute blocks of social studies on alternating days.

The district will also continue to build readers and writers through the Teachers College, Columbia University Reading and Writing Workshop that it implemented beginning at the elementary level.

Changes have also occurred in the district's math program. Everyday Math has been implemented at the elementary level and Connected Math has been implemented at the middle school level. 

It is the stated goal of the administration that students take algebra in the eighth grade to ready them for pre-calculus or calculus by their junior year in high school, the goal being to positively impact their SAT math scores.

On Wednesday, Sept. 5, the Board of Health will resume their regular monthly meetings at 4:15pm in the basement of borough hall. 

Also on Wednesday, the Board of Education will have a work session that is open to the public. The meeting will be held at 7pm in the media center at New Milford High School.

On Thursday, Sept. 6 there will be a meeting of the Rent Leveling Board in the upstairs conference room of Borough Hall at 7pm.
