NEW MILFORD, NJ - The Greater Bergen County YMCA is extending its child care and youth programs to New Milford with the opening of a new location called Greater Bergen County YMCA - New Milford Center.

The Y plans to convert the 26,000 square-foot former Ascension Church school building at 1092 Carnation Dr. into a state-of-the-art licensed child care center for toddlers to preschoolers, to start April 18, 2022, and use the additional space to conduct a variety of enrichment, sports, and wellness programming for youth and adults of all ages, to start April 1, 2022.

“This building gives us the needed indoor and outdoor space to offer our high quality exercise, athletics, and educational programs to more families,” said Glenn MacAfee, Greater Bergen Y Executive Director. “We are excited to be a part of the New Milford community and soon welcome residents to come and enjoy the Y.”

The Y, the largest provider of child care in the U.S., is nationally recognized for its stimulating Early Childhood programs and child safety and protection standards. The Greater Bergen County YMCA - New Milford Center would feature contemporary classroom space for children as young as 6 weeks and up to age 5, slated to open April 18. The child care center would immediately be open to ages 2-and-a-half to 5, and anticipates opening to younger children in early 2023.

In addition to child care, the new building’s rooms and amenities, which include a gymnasium and basketball court, would be adapted for year-round youth sports and movement classes including dance, soccer and volleyball, STEAM programs and enrichment, popular fitness and parent-child classes like ZumbaⓇ, Yoga, Pilates, and Tai Chi, and uniquely themed summer camp programs, such as the Y’s popular Sports Galore Camp.

The Y also plans to offer special exercise and wellness programs for seniors. Fitness and senior age programs would begin in 2022. More details will be shared as plans are finalized.

As announced in 2019, the Y has been working with NAI Hanson to secure a buyer for its Hackensack building on Main Street while exploring locations to operate a satellite facility.

“We are grateful to have found this wonderful new location that enables us to continue serving our current members and families, while growing programs so more individuals have the opportunity to reach their full potential,” said Richard K. Gorab, President and CEO of the Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges.
