Bomb Squad Detonates Device at 36th Street Beach

Ocean City police respond to a report of a hazardous device in a vehicle at 36th Street.

A bomb squad detonated a suspected "hazardous device" on the beach at 36th Street on Tuesday evening.

Ocean City police responded to a tip on Tuesday (Aug. 6) from a person concerned about a co-worker who had reportedly talked about a device that he had learned to make on the Internet and that was stored in his car on 36th Street, according to Ocean City Police Capt. Steve Ang.

The co-worker cooperated with police and gave police access to his vehicle, Ang said.

An Atlantic City bomb squad was called in to dispose of the device. They apparently did so on the beach at 36th Street. Ang said in similar scenarios the detonating device often can create more of an explosion than the suspected device. The beach was empty on a rainy and cool Tuesday evening.

Ang said any potential charges are pending the completion of an investigation and will likely be released in the morning.

Unconfirmed reports suggest the person under investigation is a member of the Ocean City Beach Patrol.
